Starting today's letter with an invitation to breathe into what is calling. Whether it is the page, your space, or some silence, let this moment be your space for intimate honesty. A moment to take 3 deep belly breaths and see what speaks to you in that silence. Today's artist interview is one to remind you to revive your creative spark, gradually or with excitement. Here in our Easeful Place we are set to share space with the incredible GG Renee Hill, an author and space-holder who tends to the vast possibility of the words you write and the reality you dream up. As the author of several journals and books, GG's most recent offering - Story Work: Field Notes on Self-Discovery and Reclaiming Your Narrative - is a testament to living in your reclaimed power and soul knowing. My overall reflection of GG's work is that she makes the transformation in both writing and soul work not only possible, but carefully guided, which makes this interview perfectly timed for Scorpio season. These interviews exist to inspire us on our journeys to creating the lives, communities, families, and inner environments needed to house ease. I select artists from around the world with different modes of creation and lifestyles to show how possible it is for us to build ease and art into our lives. The intention is to deepen our understanding of what is possible, to think limitlessly, in community. In conversation with GG Renee HillWho is GG and what do you do? What is your one-word manifesto or mantra in life? Surrender. I’ve always been sensitive, someone who has big feelings and big empathy. So much so that I’ve carried the sense that I wasn’t quite built for the harshness of this world. Anxiety has been an unwanted companion throughout my life. My one-word mantra is surrender because it’s a practice I’ve had to learn and keep learning in order to move through life and fully experience it, not making my world smaller out of fear and what I always perceived as fragility. How did you get started with your craft? What has changed from then to now? My creative journey started with blogging. It was a creative outlet at a time when I felt lost and unfulfilled in life and work. Reading and writing reawakened the creative spirit I’d neglected for years while navigating school, motherhood, and career in my early twenties. Once I began writing, my work began to evolve into creating spaces for others to write as well. I developed courses, self-published books, and realized that I had a passion for cultivating experiences where people could feel the transformative power of the written word—getting their inner thoughts, emotions, and stories onto the page, and experiencing the magic of doing it in community. The process of building these spaces has pulled me along gently, expanding me creatively, personally, and professionally in ways that I never imagined possible. Reading and writing reawakened the creative spirit I’d neglected for years while navigating school, motherhood, and career in my early twenties. Who are your favourite artists? I love art of all kinds, but my favorite artists are writers. The writers who have inspired my writing the most are Susan L. Taylor, Alice Walker, and Maya Angelou. I read works by all of them at pivotal times in my life. Susan L. Taylor’s Lessons in Living gave me a glimpse of the kind of writer I could become, weaving personal stories with inspirational and spiritual truths. Alice Walker’s In Search of My Mother’s Gardens reawakened my creative spirit and gave me a vision of what it is to be a woman who honors her lineage, her stories, and her creativity as a sacred practice. And Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings helped me recognize how much I’d silenced myself after childhood and illuminated the courage and creativity it would take for me to reclaim my voice. She showed me that writing could be a refuge and a path to freedom. I’ve also been heavily influenced by bell hooks and Audre Lorde. There are just too many to name! What or where is the easeful place for you? When I think of an easeful place, my mind first goes to the beach and the ocean. And then it goes to a library or a cozy bookstore. But truly, my most easeful place is an inner space I discovered within myself through meditation. It’s a space I nurture so I can carry it with me wherever I go. So I can tap into it when I need to. My easeful place is being able to indulge in solitude, daydream, escape the noise, and take time to recharge and center myself. You are so worthy of ease. How do you remind yourself of this? I used to think that I was destined to struggle through life because I was too sensitive and had too much baggage and pain from childhood. But I learned that sensitivity and strength don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and I learned that healing is a creative process that gives meaning to pain. For me, the path to ease has been learning what my needs and values are, realizing that I’m worthy of honoring them, that I don’t have to earn my worthiness through accomplishment or performance. Ease doesn’t mean that everything is easy, it means that when I live in alignment with my values, even the hard things ultimately lead to a sense of ease. My new book, Story Work: Field Notes on Self-Discovery is out as of November 4, 2025. Blending personal story with creative inspiration, Story Work is about the stories we tell ourselves and how to understand, reimagine, and reclaim them. Readers can find more of my work at allthemanylayers.com, 'Writing the Layers' on Substack and Instagram. Thank you, GG, for offering an intimate look into your world and sharing uplifting reminders.
