An artist interview by TheEasefulPlace 🌿
Hello hello and happy Saturday. Happy 10/10/(10). Happy new moon in Libra too. What is newly being seeded or harvested in this chapter of your living?
Today's letter is an artist interview with Grace Brown, a writer and soul-led artist in many senses. Grace and I connected through Substack, where I was able to unravel more of her heart's work through her words and eventually meditative somatic sharings too. We'll be co-facilitating a poetry and movement event on Sunday 25th October with plenty of juicy breath-filled space to explore the power of poetry and moving thoughts, ideas, and creative being through the body. In this interview we'll discover more about her artistic practice and how she finds, meets, and expands ease as part of her practice.
About the series: These interviews exist to inspire us on our journeys to creating the lives, communities, families, and inner environments needed to house ease. i select artists from around the world with different modes of creation and lifestyles to show how possible it is for us to build ease and art into our lives. The intention is to deepen our understanding of what is possible, to think limitlessly and in community.
Artist Interview with Grace
Who is Grace?
My name is Grace Brown. I am a Tree with many branches and deep roots. I guide people on their journey to soul living. I write from the place of the ancestors, both living and beyond. My purpose is to serve as a bridge between worlds, helping others access language that exists deep within.
What is your one-word mantra in life?
I live by the power of threes so I have three
I can only take you as far as I’ve gone, so I must keep going.
This life is long. It is what you make it.
Breathe.
Who are your favourite artists?
My favorite artists are Roses. They exist in so many shades and hues. Each of them with their own meaning. They live by season and teach you impermanence. You must appreciate their beauty while they are there because in Time they will be gone.
What or where is the easeful place for you?
The easeful place is a state of being. Home. It could be a place, a person, a mood. For me, the easeful place is like sitting at the trunk of a Tree. A cozy place to rest your body and be off your feet. Something that can hold the weight of whatever you are carrying and Listen.
How do you create space for your authentic truth to exist undeterred as a poet and artist?
This is an interesting question. One I had to sit with to understand its true meaning and ask. I believe it was Ocatavia Butler that said “you have to write yourself in.” something along those lines. You have to write your story. Only you can tell the truth of your life. And while facts remain the same, the truth and your understanding of it can change. I am relentless in getting closer to the truth and I find that deeper truths are revealed in the travels I make and what the land there shares with me. So I create a life that allows me to continue getting closer to the truth and having secluded space to return to so I can synthesize what I have found into my art and my words.
What are you creating in this moment?
I am creating a Life in this moment. A world to exist in that allows for simplicity and freedom to create at my own pace. Where there is a base to return and flexibility to fly out. A world that allows me to breathe and be reminded of breath. That balances between motion and stillness. Existing in this way allows me to birth projects from a pure place. With that comes sacrifices but for me, freedom is priceless. I am creating a roadmap for others to do the same. From the inside out.
You are so worthy of ease. How do you remind yourself of this?
You are so worthy of ease. That. I am going to continue to repeat that to myself until my bones believe it. So, thank you for the reminder. And the reminder to keep remembering.
How can we connect with your work?
I recently wrote a poetry book Ancestor’s Daughter that serves a roadmap, a bridge from one life into another life. One of your choosing. Guidance for the path less traveled. You can find it here.
You are also welcome to follow my writing and journey via Substack Anatomy of a Tree. If you are interested in guidance work please reach out via email to imaginegraceguide@gmail.com
