An Artist Interview with Carrington - Chef, Lover and Mother.

An easeful conversation with Carrington🌿 by The Easeful Place

How is your heart, body, and mind? What are they moving through today? Feel free to take a moment to pause, listen, and receive what is revealed.

Today's artist interview comes by way of Virginia, U.S. If you're a subscriber to Life Is In Love With Me, you're probably familiar with our guest as she shared an Italian travel memory as an invited and cherished guest writer. I resonated with Carrington's work through her familiar air-sign freeness and her willingness to be seen loving, to be seen honestly leaning into the process of being self and mother and artist all while keeping warmth at the center of all of her digital/physical bodies of work. Carrington's Substack - a true Nurturing Wind to breathe in - explores moments and noticings of life as a small business owner of Chanterelle Cafe as well as a mother, nurturing love into home and the hearts within it. In this interview, she graces our Sunday with some inner moments of connectedness of being an artist working alongside life and nature.

These interviews exist to inspire us on our journeys to creating the lives, communities, families, and inner environments needed to house ease. I select artists from around the world with different modes of creation and lifestyles to show how possible it is for us to build ease and art into our lives. The intention is to deepen our understanding of what is possible, to think limitlessly, in community.

In conversation with Carrington

Who is Carrington and what do you do?

I am Carrington! I am a lover and an artist living harmoniously in this lifetime. My mediums for expressing love and art have varied throughout my life. Right now, my greatest expression of my love is through mothering my sweet son. My greatest expression of art is through cultivating celebratory and consciously-aware experiences through food.

I thought I knew what love was but then I had my son. He’s what I call my heart outside my body. Genuinely the love I had for myself, life, my husband and God grew so big that I birthed my heart and now it’s bouncing around the world with joy. It’s equally terrifying and exalting to have your heart exposed like that but I wouldn’t have it any other way. He is my greatest work of love and art ever.

I’m also the owner of a vegan bakery in central Virginia called Chanterelle Cafe. I lovingly create food meant to be savored and celebrated with. Anything from decadent chocolate cake with espresso buttercream to a savory Misir Wat Patty, I want you to feel the loving energy I pour into the food in every bite.

Choosing to be vegan is a dietary liberation because it’s a choice and reduces harm in the world. We do not get to choose if we have food allergies which I call I dietary limitation. I approach food from an equity standpoint. Everyone deserves high quality food that aligns with their ethical and bodily needs. Everyone deserves to celebrate!

What is your one-word manifesto or mantra in life?

Nurture.

Who are your favourite artists?

Music - Willow Smith, Palace, Malcolm Todd - their music moves me so deeply I feel like they read my journal entries and wrote songs out of them.

Chefs - Edna Lewis, Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor, Kwame Onwuachi - each touch on my approach to food and how storytelling through food can change the world

Ethereal - God, Gaia, Luna - do I need to explain their work beyond potent & breathtaking?

What or where is the easeful place for you?

I feel at ease in nature without feeling tethered to daily life or human intervention. For example, I love foraging for mushrooms in forests in the mountains as much as I love foraging for seashells along a coastal shoreline. Being in vast nature spaces is where I feel most at ease to just breathe and be myself.

On the other hand, I love being cuddled up in my home with all my comforts. Fireplace going, aromatherapy, good food & a fun beverage, my journal, vinyl records spinning and being in my loved one’s arms. It feels like we’re the only ones on Earth in those moments and I cherish them deeply.

What is something new about how you move through the world that influences your art or creation?

I’ve started to perceive inconvenience as a hidden answer to all things worthwhile in this world. I make a lot of choices from the mindset of “this is inconvenient but is better overall for all.” Everything from being vegan to socializing at community events to living in the rural countryside with little resources to homeschooling to not using AI, is all choosing the inconvenient path for the better. Convenience is at the expense of connection and that’s not a cost I’m willing to pay anymore.

You’re getting your birthday cake in probably the most inconvenient way from me. I’m taking my time to hand stir the batter, decorate to music of your choice and deliver to your house with my son in his car seat. Why? Because you’re going to feel the love I put into it that way than if I industrialized or streamlined it.

You are so worthy of ease. How do you remind yourself of this?

I’m a morning person so I value setting the tone of my day well so I can maintain a sense of ease from the moment I open my eyes until I close them at the end of the day. Journaling at sunrise with the birds while sitting on the porch reminds me that I’m responsible for how I experience the world. That’s all I have control over really, my responses to it all, so I choose the easeful path as much as I can.

Mindfulness reminder::

The power of encouraging self-talk is important. We share this love (a word to replace work) frequently mostly because we know this can be the boost in confidence and awareness needed to step into spaces, positions, and seasons that make a difference. Today's prompt is:

What does this season of self mean for your inner life?

what changes? what remains the same? what is revealing itself in layers and seasons?

This is a journal prompt taken from the Return to Self Guided Journal Workbook.

If you would like to go further with your journalling practice, the 'Return to Self' guided journal is a 68-page workbook complete with 80+ prompts, mindfulness activities, mantras, a guided meditation, a curated playlist, and much more. You can get your digital copy below and begin welcoming yourself back into your fullness, because you are so worthy.
