How is your heart? What is it moving through today? Feel free to take a moment to pause, listen, and receive. Creating is an act that I always remind myself is happening in the here and now. Whether I am conscious of it, whether it is intentional, I am always creating something - space, possibility, a deeper bond, a deeper belief, a piece of writing that first lives in the moment and then in the memory. There are many ways to work with creative energy outside of art, like through meditation, scripting, or affirmations, but there is something beautiful about witnessing what is happening regardless of our effort. The creativity that is happening smoothly, maybe because of habits past formed or books we are reading and the words we are speaking because of it. A sweet gift to sit back and observe exactly what is manifesting as creation, allowing us to witness, see fully and be spectators to and recipients of it. The creativity that is quiet. Today's artist interview comes by way of Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica from a soul I have had the pleasure of interviewing in the past and whose work always lights me up with confidence that being a soul-led artist is absolutely a possibility, a must. While our space attracts creative souls, those creating more ease in and around the world, those seeking mindful gathering spaces, and journallers, it's always nice to find someone whose work and life touches on all aspects of our community and also stretches beyond it. Today we sit with Jameelah, a somatic practitioner and deep creative soul. These interviews exist to inspire us on our journeys to creating the lives, communities, families, and inner environments needed to house ease. I select artists from around the world with different modes of creation and lifestyles to show how possible it is for us to build ease and art into our lives. The intention is to deepen our understanding of what is possible, to think limitlessly, in community. In conversation with Jameelah Who is Jameelah and what do you do? I rest at the intersection of Somatic Therapy, Energy Work, and Creativity. I push the envelope and value travel over familiarity. I’ve been an artist most of my life, but in the last decade or so, that artistry has extended into my daily life, my energy, and the energy of those around me. I create safe and brave places for people to feel, to remember who they are - to connect to their ancestry and indigeneity. There is a rising consciousness on the planet - more and more people are waking up to the truth inside themselves, as outdated systems collapse before our eyes. Many of us chose to incarnate at this time - to bring peace, ease and deepen the bonds within our roots, within nature itself. Professionally, I move energy for a living - specifically life force energy or kundalini. It is a practice so ancient that the energy has many names and cultural variations. In essence, ‘life force energy’ is you. Unfettered, unimpeded, you at your most authentic self. It feels like coming home. It feels like surrender. It feels like letting go of what doesn’t serve you. After holding sessions for hundreds of people virtually, and across the globe, I’ve started offering training in this modality for those who want to uplift their communities. It’s those who know that they can do more, and want to turn their magic all the way the fuck up. It’s incredible. We often hold the training in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, and we just held our first training in Mombasa, Kenya last month - complete with a two day safari at the end. We were able to non-verbally converse with leopards, lions, elephants, and zebras. This energy has the ability to change your outlook, and with that shift - so much effortlessly aligns. It has taught me that true power, self love, and fulfillment come from surrender, not in the doing, but in the already knowing. It took me a while to get this concept. Living in Puerto Viejo these four years has helped. Being a part of nature, not just looking at it. Honoring rest like a welcomed savant, instead of an inconvenient obligation - that took time. That took hammock rocks, and tears, and processing ancestral trauma that I didn’t even know I held. Another thing about me is I’m a Somatic Trauma Specialist. I started studying Somatics (or the science of healing) in an effort to more deeply describe what is happening to our nervous system within energy work. I teach people both Somatic Therapy (to involve the conscious mind) and Kundalini Activation (the ancient energy within all of us that aligns, heals and guides) because they go together so well. What’s next for me is to travel to ancestral sites around the globe. Uncovering buried Indigenous wisdom, and holding failing systems of greed and oppression accountable. Not to shame, but to evolve. We are at a point in human history where we evolve or die. I had my first experience in Kenya last month at the oldest human burial site in Africa, a sprawling multi-layered cave called Panga ya Saida dating back 78,000 years. It’s also called ‘The Forests of Dreams’. The energy there was so potent it could only be described as celestial - even extraterrestrial. What is your one-word manifesto or mantra in life? I am led. You already are. ‘Art is not a mirror held up to society, but a hammer with which to shape it.’ Who are your favourite artists? Coax Marie be coming in strong with the mantra music, which I think should be classified as its own genre. Beautiful Chorus albums on repeat in previous toxic work environments have literally reprogrammed my mind and aligned me to greatness. As a storyteller and filmmaker, I love the work of my friend Adrian Burrell who depicts African Diasporic narratives with the weight and nuance they deserve. I also respect Lester Seal’s work as a sound healer and musician. We bond over our connection to ancestral wisdom through altered states of consciousness, and I appreciate his reverence for Indigenous Wisdom world wide. How has life shifted for you since accepting the path that called you? Life has become more aligned and therefore easeful, clearer. What or where is the most easeful place for you? What’s easeful for me is letting things unfold in their time. Trusting. Embodied trust with how I talk to and treat myself. It’s a reflection of how I treat the world. So ease to me (being someone with a lot fire, ideas and businesses) is patience, rest. Trust. And it always turns out better than when I muscle it through with control. Where ease shows up for me is often in my location. Four years ago, I made the move from LA to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. I felt a deep pull from within. And also from the energy modality I do, I was flat out guided by my team and ancestors that I needed to move to PV. I had never been. But I recognized and trusted the sensations in my body, and knew that they were leading me to something unimaginable. Within a few months of living there my anxiety symptoms completely disappeared, the cortisol levels balance and I attracted an extra $10,000 with ease and flow for a training I had imagined I’d be able to do in my 60’s, once I retired. Instead, my 30 something year old self was able to pull it into the present, and I knew when I earned the 10K that it was the precise amount to do this advanced level energy training. Which I did. It was another moment that felt like a gamble at first, but created a big leap forward that paid off big. All this to say, when I go where I am celebrated, held and aligned … the rest takes care of itself. I look at nature. Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. I model my life after the rhythms of nature. I see the natural world as our elders, like our ancestors once did. So spending the day outside meditating completely recharges and relaxes me. The actions I take after that are aligned, focused, clear and ironically much more outwardly ‘successful’, and abundance-generating than they are work. What am I offering?
I also have a visual art campaign loading within me called ‘BLACK WOMEN WHO DARE’ - I need help with it, it is just forming. There is an awareness in me that has made me more fearless. I've stepped into my role as an ancient, not in the traditional sense of an elder - but as a force of nature. I’m betting on us - the humanness in humanity. Realizing there is a truth inside my DNA and ancestral wisdom that can lead humanity back to balance. Back to the natural world. We all have it deep down. That’s why I love bringing Black people to ancestral sites - our birthright is to tap into our healing energy. An embodied truth. You can stay connected through Instagram. Gratitude to Jameelah for such an abundant interview full of gems and reminders. We’re glad to have your presence in The Easeful Place. Which part of the interview spoke most to you?
